Should The NHS Really cut More Beds
The NHS is currently being urged to cut approximately 30,000 beds from hospitals. The claim for this level of cuts is that this is not a financial decision, but a practical one, stating that the number of beds in hospitals is not representative of the number of patients who need them.
The patients that would not require beds would be the ones that they would send home for proper care. Those with serious medical conditions who require constant professional care would logically not be sent home.
At first glance, this seems like a good idea. Sending patients home who do not need constant care would allow doctors to concentrate their energy and time on patients who require their assistance. Most with diseases or conditions that are not life threatening or that could be handled by the patient would be sent home, freeing up money for other sectors.
However, the question that persists is “are these cuts really designed to help the people, or to make large cutbacks to government spending?” Sure, it sounds great that the NHS is planning to better allocate the duties of doctors, but is this really their motive? Perhaps I am cynical, but is the government really that altruistic? Are they really that giving and compassionate?
In today’s global economic condition, can we really trust the NHS to be looking out for the greater good as opposed to pinching some pennies? I really don’t want to be this pessimistic, but lately the government’s track record has not exactly been pristine and blemish free. I question these motives.
But, we must wait and see. Perhaps their claim is indeed the truth; perhaps it is our duty as citizens to trust such acts and believe in that they are doing the right thing. I for one do not trust them, but I hope I am wrong.
One last thing just before I run away, my slightly quirky boss is on this new fixation about a day of team building event london. Apparently in a couple of weeks time I will be expanding upon permanent work based relationships with all of the people that I go to the office with. Wish me luck everyone (at least I get a paid trip)!
